"Entropy" is defined as a measure of unusable energy within a closed or isolated system (the universe for example)… Entropy is also a gauge of randomness or chaos within a closed system. As usable energy is irretrievably lost, disorganization, randomness and chaos increase (https://www.allaboutscience.org/second-law-of-thermodynamics.htm) Heat death is one of the possible theories as to how the universe will die.
I began looking into the topic of entropy while pushing through this silk screen printing process on vellum paper. Entropy was brought up by my science-minded husband as he observed the process and listened to my complaints of the growing difficulties I was having with the printmaking. After the panels where finished, I decided that it must take on the imagery of a closed system. The panels were attached to a spiral of discarded metal with microfilm extending out like tentacles. After letting it hang for a while and submitting it to a show to no avail, it was time for its final process. It has reached “heat death” or as I literally take it: death from heat. It had been falling apart with its tentacles dropping off where ever and was becoming hard to store. I had enough and due to my rebellious leanings, I was ready to see something burn.
